Dad's In Town

To our surprise, my dad came into town. He has been staying with Grandma Moore and Grandpa VanLeeuwen. Last minute, Aunt Francie called and wanted the family to get together before he goes back to California. Dylan has not been able to meet him for more than a few minutes at a time, so we jumped on the opportunity to go to dinner. He is doing really well. It was great to see him happy and with family. We love him and hope that he does well in California.

The Best Two Years

Referring to our anniversary today, this has been "the best two years" of our lives.

We are so glad to be married to each other. This weekend to celebrate, we went up to Strawberry Reservoir fishing.

We stayed at the Strawberry Bay Lodge for two nights. We got to fish all day,

then went to Midway. We ate dinner at the Bear Dance Cafe where we had eaten on our Honeymoon.

For returning, they gave us a desert on the house. That night we fished at Mud Creek and caught more Cray Fish (Crawdads) than fish.

In the morning, we saw the annual Kokani Salmon spawn migration.

At the diversion, the fish were so desperate to keep moving upstream, they actually tried to jump the barriers. (Patient Photography Required)

This week we watched Marie's three kids while they were in Lake Powell. Just before they left, Travis was throwing up with the 24 Hour Flu. Sunday, my mom took the kids until I was done with a training at work on Monday. She was a trooper and held on to Parker for another day, until Tuesday, while he was still sick and extremely needy. My mom must have known that I needed to do some adjusting to being a Mom of two before we added a third/sick child. As I acclimated, she threw Parker in the mix of running kids to and from school, doing meals, keeping peace, baths, homework, playtime and bedtime. Whew. Right about when Parker came over, Zack got the bug. He threw up 5 times, although he claims 7 times (because of the grand finale). Poor kid. The rest of the week, he was scared to eat, watch movies, lay down.. - because last time, "it made me throw up." The next day, he took a nap and was out like a light until dinner time. After sleepwalking (in tears), he woke up and sat down to dinner. He was quick to correct my prayer, "This isn't dinner Ali, this is breakfast." Thinking that he meant the food, (Banana dipped in Rice Krispies), I said yep, we are having breakfast for dinner because this will be gentle on your stomach. He looked at me weird then asked if he was going to school and I said no, its over already and you were still too sick to go. It wasn't until I interrupted Katie and Zacks argument of when Mommy and Daddy would be home (Katie said in 1 day, Zack was sure that it was 0 days). It was then that I realized that Zack thought his "nap" was his nights sleep. When I told him that it was 6pm and bedtime was in two hours. I turned his little life upside down. He also had no recollection of pacing around the living room in tears, screaching.. "KATIE!!!!!" He must have been feverish. That night, at 2:30 am, I got the bug. I felt like Ron on Harry Potter when his "Eat Slugs" spell reversed back onto himself. Half hour later, Parker decided that sleeping was for healthy people. He stayed awake fussing anytime he was not held while standing up until 5:30am. Luckily I had Dylan in the morning. I couldn't face the kitchen, fearing even the slightest glance at the POPS cereal box, would bring on more slugs. Dylan got the kids off to school then Sara and Janie helped with the rest of the day. They relived me to rest and for the first time that week, have time for a shower. Marie, I got to hand it to you. I promise no more joke about you guys needing to have one more kid. You have your hands full. But, it was a great learning experience and despite what you might think.. I would do it again (minus the flu).

Grandpa Thayn

When Dylans Grandma passed away last fall, I learned of a tradition that his uncle Garrett does at funerals. He stays with the casket until it is lowered into the ground and covered. When my Grandpa Thayn passed, I decided to stay. It was neat to stay with him. I got to see how they lowered him down and saw that they did it respectfully. We will mis you grandpa. We love you.

Ella Bloom Salon & Spa

I just committed to working at Ella Bloom Salon and Spa. Its booth rent, so a little scary considering my wandering ways, but, this will settle me down. It is going to be perfect. My first day, I panic'd a little. I have to pay for a spot, whether I make money or not. But, I calmed myself down. I felt good about it yesterday, so the feeling still stands. My first day happened to be on the Chinese New Year and Panda Express was giving away free sides. I went there for lunch and my fortune cookie told me that "The project you have in mind will soon gain momentum." Perfect. I haven't looked back since. It is centrally located in Lindon, a short 15 minutes from my house. Also, get to do hair and skin there. I love it. I love my new owner. I love my new job. Le Gran Finale Fire

Tonight, the pals, specifically Rufio, threw a party for my graduation... Rufio always finds a reason to party. We had cocoa and smores. To top off the night, Ramsay threw down an especially tasty "freestyle rap" about my abilities to wax peoples nostrils. He sang along with his iphone app beatbox. Thanks guys. You are too kind.

You want to know the best thing about these photos? It was all free. A client of mine at the school has a timeshare on Main Street in Park City. It was vacant for two nights prior to a celebrity moving in. In a kind of exchange for some half off tickets at the Canyons, she let us stay there. She is so kind. ...Plug... She is a great Realtor if any of you need one.

Christmas '10

This year we celebrated with my family. Laurel and her family was in town. It was so great to see them. The boys, Hank and Charlie, have grown up so big. We spent Christmas Eve at my Moms and had our family party. My mom went all out this year with games and competitions. When the crowd left, we hung our stockings, set out cookie guys and milk for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph. Hank thought up every excuse to stay awake with us. "I need a drink.... I need a hug from Daddy, I am scared of the dark." But finally, he went to sleep so santa could come.
Christmas Day was fun as well.

On Christmas day, after the chaos of kids and presents, we were able to go see Dylan's family. Whitney wore her fashion jammies and almost fell out of the bed because they were so slick. We opened gifts and had tamales.

Later, we went to Marie and Travis' to see what their kids got for Christmas. We love family.

Lindsay and Jeff, our old neighbors, bought a house in Springville. They finally got set up and had some of their friends over fo dinner. Lindsay made an awesome potato soup and put it in bread bowls. We miss them as neighbors but we are excited that they have a "real home" now.

Allison threw the most eclectic party for Thanksgiving this year! All of the immediate family, with some extended family, friends, and even friends-of-friends, all came together to give thanks. The crowd was from young to old, single to married, large families to no family, gay to straight, liberal to conservative, a melting pot of people were welcomed.
This is a quote from a Facebook post from a young man that came.."spent Thanksgiving with a crowd of about 40 people over at the Dastrup estate. My atheist friends might not like to hear this but Mormons can be pretty awesome!"
Allison and Eric have power to touch people with their Christ-like love and acceptance. I am thankful for their example.

Extra Extra

One of our good friends, in her extra time, teaches Yoga at the climbing gym. Typically, to go, you need to have a monthly pass, but, she is able to bring some extra bodies to fill the class. Its always nice to have a little extra Kim as well as a little extra exercise in our life. In the gym, the floor is made of extra thick foam. With the unstable floor, you get an extra challenge for your balancing poses, and maybe a little extra sore the next day too. Dylan and I love to go to her class.

Honors has done it again. What have they done, you ask? They have provided a means for the poor people to play. They funded a fun trip for Dylan and I to lead. (Free Trip, Yahoo!) It had been a while since we had climbed, so we a got a little sore but it was an amazing trip. The rain fell the night before and on the way home. We couldn't have timed it better. Emphasis Such a good weekend. With all this school, we needed a break.

Archeology Internship

We have been so lucky to be able to lead trips for UVU. Now that Dylan is in the Honors program, we get to lead especially cool ones. This weekend we went on an "Archeological Internship" with Renee Barlow. We went into the San Raphael Swell to an undisclosed location to document a panel with indian remains. The process that goes into recording these for the state was extensive and really interesting. Here are some of the pictures:

We are finally coming home! No more door to door! We didn't love the job, but now its over. Homeward bound at last. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to go out to make more money than Utah offers but now with tuition due and now its all gone and we can go back to the broke newlywed stereotype. We got to see some amazing places while in the east so we don;t regret it a bit. We learned a lot. I guess I can't say it enough.. We are coming home!!!

Yesterday, we went to the Manhattan Temple. Our friend Jordan, that guided in Moab with us last year, let us stay the night at his really nice flat. He is going to Colombia Law and lives right downtown. He came with us to the 6:30 session. Afterwards, we went to Tom's Restaurant (the Seinfeld cafe). It was really fun to see Jordan, and so nice to get to the temple. All of this took place in about 12 hours, then, back to work.

The Jersey Shore

This weekend Dylan and I went to Ocean City, New Jersey, to the beach! It took almost two hours to drive there, but then we got to relax, read, write in journals play in the water. We were fortunate to have found an abandoned beach umbrella, so we didn't get bit of sun. Who needs a tan? We have something better, a Farmers Tan!

After soaking up the shade, we walked the boardwalk and ate at the famous Mack and Mancos Pizza Shop.
This trip was a perfect blend of experiencing the east coast while recuperating from the long week.

Dylan and I went to Philadelphia for the fourth. It was the perfect way to spend the holiday. The history of the our nation's independence unfolds right before your eyes.

We watched the Independence Parade,

visited the Declaration house,

Liberty Hall,

Independence Hall,

The Second National Bank,

and the Benjamin Franklin home and underground museum.

For lunch, we got Pho (Fuh) from a Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown.

Then, we went to the Philadelphia Arts Museum for a festival and concert.

We enjoyed the festival food like giant pretzels and roasted corn!

The Roots and The Goo Goo Dolls played live before the fireworks show. Apparently this fireworks presentation is one of the biggest in the nation. Check out the last few seconds.

This week we went to the Washington DC temple one day before work. It was so pretty! And also really nice to do something other than doors. We miss going every week.

Dylan and I had been wanting to go to the Marietta Diner since we had been in Georgia. As one last southern hoorah, we stopped there with our cars loaded up to get some authentic southern ribs and fried chicken.
It was really good and apparently, this is a place to be. There were celebrities photos, of them with the waiters, all over the walls.

We then drove through the night and ended up sleeping in the picnic area of a baptist church.
In the morning we took a detour through Shenandoah National Park. We hiked to a waterfall. It was really nice to recreate for once this summer!

Sunday, the office had a potluck BBQ at the apartment pool. Then Whitney, Skid, Dylan and I decided to go downtown to the park. We walked around enjoying ourselves then heard a familiar song. We followed the music and found a free concert in the park. Not just any concert, MINDY SMITH! Whitney and I love her. We sat down on the ground and listened in front row. What luck. Afterwards, being a small concert, we got her autograph. What a great Sunday.

Early Morning Dip

Ok, so maybe 10 o'clock is not early morning.. but... Dylan and I love swimming when we wake up. The pool's water isn't heated x so it wakes us right up. It makes for an energized day. We noticed that we sell better when we have more energy too!
Oh ya, we splurged on a couple pairs of fancy goggles to make us swim faster. Don't they look great? :)

Down On The Corner

Tonight we went to Atlanta to hear our co-sales agents busk. Beaux on the accordion, Ashley on the glockenspiel and Court on the guitar. Together they made $14. They were pretty entertaining. Everyone out here have very unique personalities which blend together well. When doing summer sales, I think it helps a lot to like the people that you work with.

::Lost in the Slots : Day Hike Goes Bad::

We should have known from the old hit series, Gilligan's Island, not to ever go on a..
This weekend Dylan, his entire family and I met outside of Kanab, in the Grand Staircase National Monument (in the van of course).Saturday, we hiked to some stone toadstools near our camp. They were awesome.
The next day, the trip got a bit more intense.

We decided to hike Buckskin Gulch. We had a poorly made book with maps of the area. In our attempts to convert the Kilometers from the Map Scale into Miles, we estimated the hike was six miles. We estimated that we would walk 2.5 miles/hour making the trip a total of three hours including the lunch stop and rests. This is a count of how those three hours turned into a sore 22 hours.

Problem(s) 1- Late start. Long car shuttle. Poor map. Lost time on wrong roads. Hike began at 4:00.
Problem 2- Hikers we met said that they saw no water crossings, so we took out our Chacos/Sandals from our backpacks and left them in the truck.
Problem 3- Hiking is slower or miles were more than anticipated.
Problem 4- Darkness falls as we get to some water crossings. Only two out of seven people have headlamps.
This picture shows the first ankle deep crossing. We hoped this was the only one, but no.
Problem 5- While keeping shoes off to stay dry, we lost daylight by hiking slowly on sharp rocks barefoot between the freezing cesspools.
Problem 6- Knee deep cesspools turn to waist deep cesspools. Knowing its getting to dark to have wet clothes, we have to cross them in our skivvys.
Problem 7- Shivers and mild panic mixed with adrenaline set in.
Problem 8- We are not sure whether the pools were before or after our exit trail.. We couldn't go back. I was too dark, we missed the trail and it was too late. We were lost and the steep canyon walls didn't allow for any warmth from sun in the day, now, moon in the night.

We said a family prayer and this is what changed:

Saving Grace 1- We were able to get a GPS Satellight reading from a canyon opening just after the pools. We were only .9 miles but 400 vertical feet climb from the van!
Saving Grace 2- The opening was warmer and unshadowed. We had a little light from a full moon and we got to put our dry clothes on. The shivering stopped.
Saving Grace 3- We faced the fact that we would have to spend the night. We hiked a few miles/a few hours down and up the canyon to stay warm and to collect bits of driftwood to make a fire. We found a good place to camp at 2AM.

Saving Grace 4- Eric packed fire starter and 2 emergency blankets to keep the heat in our fire circle.
Saving Grace 5- We had, not a lot, but enough water and food.
Saving Grace 6- Nobody was hypothermic while drifting in and out of sleepy consciousness.
Saving Grace 7- In the morning, after a cold restless night, we found the steep canyon exit trail and made it out the steeps to the van.

Whitney said, "I think that this is how people die while hiking." She was right. We were so lucky. This canyoneering hike was a huge eye opener. We all learned a lot. Mainly, we learned that poor planning leads to poor results.
I am thankful that nobody lost their level head, that Taylor's feeling in his toes came back, that Allison's throwing up wasn't something more severe like exhaustion or severe dehydration, that we were able to have enough wood for a fire that lasted for the whole night, that Allison brought plastic wrap that we were able to wrap around cold legs, that we didn't run out of water, that we didn't fall off the steep cliff climbs that we had to take to get out, that Dylan was there, that Whitney was just as terrified of the cliff crossings as I was, that we said a prayer, or in my case, a million. I am grateful that this was a time to look back on as a time of blessings and adventure, not great chaos and unfortunate loss.

Water Aerobics

This week I went swimming at the Provo Rec Center. As I was swimming laps, I saw a water instructor dancing and lip singing to ABBA on the side of the pool. Then I realized she was teaching a class consisting of mostly old ladies. They were all very into it, singing and dancing, while in the water. "Water Aerobics!" I thought. It was hilarious! So I joined them. I was the bright new chicken. Everyone waddled over and talked to me, introducing themselves and telling me about the latest malt o' meal coupons. They made me feel very welcome and young. I liked it so much that I took Brenna with me. It was the funnest workout ever. I am a regular now.

Yet Another Obsession

For any of you that know me, and know how infrequently my television is on, you will all be surprised that my new obsession involves turning on that blasted boob tube.

Introducing, my new love, the old western classic, Lonesome Dove.
Now, I am not sure if it is Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, or what.. but my heart melts every time I pop in one of the movies..

Dylan will be sure to tell you that I used to make fun of him for watching these old flicks.. but alas, he was right, those tough cowboys-slash-Texas rangers stole my heart. Pretty ridiculous, to the point that I, today, got on Amazon and ordered four similar movies.

Fortunately, my new passion is cheap, much more cheap than most. Amazon sells used movies starting at 99 cents! Some are more than others.

Provo City has been kind enough to provide eight, I will repeat 8, dumpsters at the park for public use, right behind my house.. Well, you know what they say, "One mans trash..."
OK, OK.. Yes, I dumpster dive. I know the man in charge of the whole operation by name, and he knows mine. He is not surprised to see me everyday.
My friend Annie and I found a working air hockey table for her brother. Another day, I found a water storage barrel, a hose, and a moving dolly. So far, Dylan found the grand prize, a Schwinn bike that he cleaned up and sold for $125 bucks! Such treasures make me dive unashamed.
One, like Dylan, might say I am obsessed. But, I, rather, would say I'm persistent.

Moab in the Van!

April 2-4

Dylan and I took the van down to Moab for the weekend to celebrate Easter! One might think that Easter is for family, but our family is pretty awesome and are scattered across the globe this year.
My parents are in California on a Road Trip (safely surviving that huge 7.2 earthquake, might I add)
Marie's family is in Death Valley
Laurel's family is in Logan
Dylans parents are in Peru visiting his sister Whitney.
His other sister, Megann is likely hiking somewhere in Arizona with her husband Taylor.
Despite our travels, the Easter Bunny still found us. On Saturday, we visited with Dylan's uncle Carl, who just bought an amusement park in the heart of Moab. He gave us a tour of the things that he was going to do to save the place from going under.

Afterwards, we made a frustrating and all together unsuccessful attempt at mountain biking. After finally finding the supposed easy trail in Moab, Dylan did great, but me? I gashed my shin open after only two cranks at the pedals. Maybe next time it will do better, or, on second thought, maybe I am not cut out for it..

We then cut our losses and decided to go thrift shopping. That makes everything better, right? We ran into our great friends Kpax and Derek there. We all went together to watch the mayhem at Potato Salad Jeep Trail. Out of the 10 or so Jeeps we watched, one rolled, there was such a crowd that as soon as it happened, the turned over Jeep got literally mob-rushed and pushed back upright.

Dylan then went to the Priesthood session while I drove around town, and hung out with Kpax. When it was over, we went out to Big Bend Campground where we first camped together, and also got engaged. Big Bend is a special place for us.

The next morning, after sleeping in uncle Carls yard, we hung out in the van and made breakfast.
We went and listened to General Conference (streamed from the Launrdomat Free WIFI). Now that is Mormon "Dirt Baggin' it. After it downloaded, we drove back to Big Bend to finish the session.
We finished our trip by hiking up Negro Bill Canyon and visiting the Hazletts, our river company owners.
Notice that there is about twice as much money as the entire van is worth on the back rack:) Hooray for rentals. We love Moab.

Tribute to my Subaru and Long Lost Friend

This is a shocking change, but to me, there are tons of Subis out there that I love, but only one van just like this.. I sold this exact van years ago and have missed it ever since. A few owners down the line, sold it back to me. I am so excited to have adventures with Dylan, family and friends.
Its not much for commuting, but, until 2011, I wont have to commute anywhere, so, I will take my bike and try using public transportation more often. Worthy sacrifices for Stella, the van.

Chaco Canyon

Another trip lead! We took a group of Honors down to Edge of the Cedars State Park, Hovenweep National Monument and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. We saw some amazing things over the equinox.

We received a very flattering e-mail afterwards that was sent to our boss Kim form the Coordinator of the Honors Program at UVU. It read:

"Coolest" Valentines Weekend Ever in an Igloo

For Valentines this year, our first one as married folk, Dylan took me to an Indian Trade post on Friday. My wedding ring no longer fits with my skinny winter hands, so, he wanted me to have something that fits, and that has significance to both of us. The interesting part was when he called me to go to the store, I was already in search for a casual wedding band for him too. Our rings are heirlooms and we don't want anything to happen to them.. That's why we feel it important to have casual ones. Our busy outside lifestyle is a bit to scary for a loose diamond heirloom. Anyways, we found a matched set of HOPI water design wedding bands. They are awesome.
Saturday, we slept in and went snowboarding! First time of the year that we haven't used those two plank skis of ours. It was really fun to get out. On our way home Dylan took me to an igloo in the canyon. He was a gentlemant and carried ALL of our stuff up. We cooked venison (deer steaks) over open flame and slept the night. It went so perfect. Besides the fact that, the 'coons got our bread by morning.

Bryce Canyon in 25 hours

This winter camping trip turned out to be pretty plush. We got hooked up with a free room at the Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel. We were too late checking in to use the hot tub, but, got a warm bed, and breakfast in the morning. Saturday, we spend cross country skiing on the Fairyland and Rim Trail. The clouds were so thick we could not see down the rim. Actually we had no visibility, but, the snow conditions were perfect. It was a great get away. Of course, coming down off the rim and out of Bryce, we were able to see the beautiful sights.

Loads of New Snow at the Cabin

This last weekend was the annual winter trip at the Evans cabin. The snow cat wasn't working this year so Scott and Michelle VanLeeuwen were so kind to let us use theirs to shuttle up coolers and heavy backpacks. We played games, watched movies, and hung out. Also, Sven, Dylan and I did some backcountry touring on our telemark skis while others snowshoed along the Weber River. As we skied, the amount of snow made it hard to stay on our feet. We are new to the telemarks and 2+ feet was very hard to ski. Dylan got some nice face shots.. We love playing with all the pals. There was so much snow... We had a blast.

Green Canyon Yurt

Last weekend Dylan and I went to the yurt in Green Canyon near Logan with the OAC. It was a training for all of the trip leaders and scholarship students. We had Jim Knight from Black Diamond there to teach us important information for touring in the backcountry. Our favorite trick is "Taking our touring skins off with out taking our skis off first". Genius. We had a great time and really enjoyed being outside with one another.

Thanksgiving Oh Nine

My assignment was pie duty today. Earlier, I had baked and pureed a bunch of pumpkin to put in my freezer. It was way easy once this step was already done to make the pie completely from scratch. (Even grown in my family's garden!) Dylan and I cheated. We already ate the excess that we baked in a small pyrex bowl.
As I baked the pies, feeling a bit under the weather with a cold, I impatiently waited, sitting cross-legged in front of the oven like a child watching cartoons, front and center. I learned that it is as they say, "A watched pot never boils". Well, neither does "a watched pie never bake". When Dylan found me there he just smiled at me then sat down behind me to watch the pies. He is so great. He will join me in any endeavor, no matter how silly it may be.
Yesterday was our two month anniversary of being married.I keep wondering when the hard part of marriage will start. Everything has been super blissful. Today, I am especially grateful for Dylan. He is the greatest.

This year Thanksgiving was celebrated at the Thayn's house. We played Turkey Bingo and did a little Turkey Bowling. Later, after eating, we dug out my old pogs and played.

Capitol Reef : Leave No Trace

Dylan, having picked up my old scholarship at the Outdoor Adventure Center, now gets to do all the fun stuff at the shop that I have been doing for the past couple years. This weekend, all the trip leaders got to go down to the Capitol Reef Field Station to get Leave No Trace Certified. Leave No Trace is an organization that gives the public codes to live by in the backcountry. Click their logo for more information.
Sounds pretty simple right? Well, it is but there are many things that people do not even think of in leaving no trace. One small example is: (Dispose of your waste properly) When brushing your teeth while camping, instead of spitting on a rock or into the soil, spray it! That way, because it is spread out, it will decompose faster without effecting one area negatively. We learned a ton this weekend and gained some great relationships with the people there.

Eclectic Lives On

Last semester, Kpax, Brenna and I started what we call "Eclectic Tuesday". This is where we would bring food to make dinner and then have play time. This semester it lives on. Our circle has grown with roommates, friends boyfriends and husbands. We usually have a crowd of ten or so. It is so nice to have time with the friends every week. Now although it is held on Thursdays, we still call it "Eclectic Tuesday". Now we have hosts and usually sit in a circle to do the 'Top Three of the Week'.

Dylan and I wanted to be have a "couples costume" this year, being newlyweds and all.. Here is what t came down to.
Cowboy and and Indian! and yes.. I do look like a mail-order bride.

On Halloween night, we threw our first party together! Lots of the pals came dressed up and ready to party. I baked all day in preparation. Everything was made from scratch with pumpkins! Dylan also made some jalapeno poppers. They were a big hit. We ate and played the paper bag game. I am still sore.

San Diego Honeymoon

The incredible view from our room.. We were right on the marina.
With the San Diego "GO" cards, we had free admission to anything. We tried to fit it all into our days and soon realized that we would need a vacation from our vacation. We are glad we saw it all though.

The zoo was awesome. We even saw my uncle Bruce there. California State finally caged him.

We also went to the wavehouse, a gathering place for surfers and tourists. We rode the small wave on small surfboards and boogie boards.

The 'regulars' made it look easy. We called this guy, "Mr. Cool" because he held the modeling face, 'Blue Steel' the entire time he was on the wave. He surfed like it was his job.

On our sea kayaking adventure, we met a lady that was paddling around on a paddle board. She told us about a gathering place for seals that was just down the coast. We paddled right to them and they would swim past us. It was intimidating but we were told that they are used to humans and quite tame.

Dylan found a GIANT piece of KELP!

We did some boat tours. This one is permanently docked at the marina for tours. The USS MIDWAY. We got to walk through the whole thing and talk to veterans inside.

Because whale watching was not in season until December, we took a spin around the harbor. We saw sea lions and submarines.

The harbor had a ton of history, but I just liked the ride.

Our first time at the beach together was perfect with a beautiful sunset. We had a great time just walking around. We met/watched a really old guy rollerblading on the boardwalk. He had a boombox fannypack that was blaring christmas tunes such as The Drummer Boy song. It was really amusing.

At the music musuem, it walked us through the evolution of music from the early stages until now. At the end of the tour, they had a room with instruments to try for yourself. We spent a lot of time there.

We were also lucky enough to go to the temple. After the endowment, they asked us to stay for a few sealings. It was a beautiful temple.

We saw all kinds of life at the Birch Aquarium. We got to pet some things like starfish and sea cucumbers. I didn't dare touch the lobster.

but we are also glad to be home to get some rest. Real life begins.. now.

Elk Season

Dylan got a Spike Elk Tag to go hunting this year. Now that he is the "man of the house", he wants to "provide for his family". It's wonderful that he is doing it because, how sweet would it be to start off a marriage with a freezer full of meat?! That is some good food storage. As a bonus, elk is my favorite meat!
Last night we went up American Fork Canyon with his friend Chad. We saw just about everything but a spike. We saw three huge bull elk, a cow elk with her calves and tons of deer. It was really neat. The road was snowed over and slippery. Dylan thinks that last night may be the last time to go up that road if this early snow continues. He is going out again today. He has got about ten days left to find one. Good Luck Dylan!

It seems that EVERY girl lures in their mates with long beautiful locks. Then, once they have been caught, tied down, the old ball and chain... Whack! Off goes the hair. Well yes, I was one of those girls. To my defense, Dylan likes short hair! Why not play if he is going to love it? To be honest, I think he might like it better than my untamed hippie hair. So now, we are both growing out our hair. He is working on a fancy beard while I play around with short cuts. We are going to be the neat couple. Ever changing. Spoiled by my Husband

Yesterday was my birthday! I turned 23. Dylan spoiled me all day. His gift was simple and sweet. He had bought it three and a half years ago on his mission in hopes of giving it to his future wife. It was a carving of a hummingbird and a flower out of ecuador nut that is like 'nature's Ivory'. It is now displayed in our living room with all of our keepsakes. The day had still just begun. We left our mini-honeymoon and hit the thrift stores in Salt Lake (a real key to my heart). He bought me a vintage box and a journal. Then we went back through Lehi to pick up my car that was stuffed to capacity with wedding gifts. In hopes of getting our little home in order before real life hits us, we opened all of the gifts. I have never opened so many gifts on my birthday. We are so blessed to have this added help to make our apartment into a home. After the last present was unwrapped, we drove to Main Spring Day Spa (where I work) and got a couples massage! Dylan then took me to the store to buy ingredients for a meal of my choice. He cooked away while I looked at wedding pictures. Then he blindfolded me to surprise me with the beautiful meal that he made. Thanks Dylan for making it memorable!

Wedding Day

Through a lot of planning and anticipation, this day turned out perfect. That morning, on September 25th, 2009, I woke up, bounced right out of bed (which is uncommon for me), showered, got dressed, all before five. I was still drying my hair when Kooie came over to do my hair. She did great. Dylan and his dad, Eric, got to my house to leave for the temple as I was putting in the last few pins and starting my makeup. I rode to Salt Lake with them. It was a surreal drive. All the while thinking, I am going to the temple... for my wedding! Dylan sat beside me in the back of the truck, enduring my periodic arm shakings that I would give him to express my excitement and nervousness. As we got into the temple, I began seeing friends and family arrive. It felt just like other temple sealings that I have been to, except this time, I was allowed in.. and.. I was the Bride! It was beautiful inside and the experiences I had with Dylan there that day were unforgettable. My grandpa's cousin sealed us in front of our dear family and closest friends. It was so wonderful. The tears were composed for most of the ceremony but as the line of hugs after the sealing came, I lost it. I felt the love of everyone there. Coming out of the temple with so many faces there to support us, we both stood in disbelief. It was all a blur through taking pictures. Unfortunately, we were zombies because we were so tired. We were glad to have had resting time in between the temple and the ring exchange/dinner and reception. We arrived before three for more pictures, had a beautiful ring exchange performed by Eric then a big family dinner put on my his mother, Allison. The entire night everyone awed at her work. She made my dress. It was beyond perfect. After the dinner, the reception started. Unlimited ice cream bar, and unlimited familiar faces. We were impressed with the efforts that people made to be there. It meant a lot to us. My mom's hard work and attention to detail paid off. My Aunt Francie coordinated the kitchen with the help of cousins and uncles. It was a lovely reception. The cake was made by a good friend. It was beautiful. Also, Dylan's sister and brother in law, Megann and Taylor made the grooms cake. My cousin Emily caught my bouquet as I threw it off of the balcony. Our first dance was fun and lighthearted as we danced to Ray Lamontagne, Forever My Friend. We made our exit quietly and drove home in our decorated car. I couldn't have dreamt up a better day. We are so grateful to everyone that helped.

That 'someday' was yesterday! I went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple to take out my endowments. It was really special to have my family, close friends and most importantly, Dylan, there with me. My mom was my escort, to lead me through each step of the way. It was life changing. I can't wait to go back. Tomorrow! To be married!!!

Labrinth Canyon

Going on a five day river trip two weeks before the wedding? When its not even completely planned yet? And the dress isn't finished? Eh.. Sounds like a great idea right? Ok, maybe not so much, but what do you do? Dylan and I were given an opportunity to go trip lead a Labyrinth Canyon (Green River) with UVU. So we went. I am sure that it would have been really nice to get it all done, perhaps with less stress, but this was our last trip as a "single couple". We get married in eleven days!

I am really grateful for all the help that we have had. Our mothers have really shown amazing support and have put in a lot of hard work to show it. Dylan and I are so appreciative. Without them, there is no way that this trip would have been possible.

The trip started out a bit rough. Dylan was in charge of the menu and the food planning. Before we were supposed to meet the group to leave, we went grocery shopping. The UVU card got denied each time that we swiped it. Bummer. Nearly $450 on the almost poor newlyweds debit card. We are just hoping and praying that we get reimbursed soon. It is not a fun float.

As these trips often go, once we put our loaded canoes in the water, it was smooth sailing. Cares left our mind with each stroke. if we didn't have it then, or forgot it in the car, we didn't need it.

Its really something to travel with experts of the outdoors. Kim Reynolds is an amazing adventure outdoors-woman who can solve any problem in the backcountry. It helps that she is in the nursing program too. We also were with Paul Bybee, a Geologist, Jim Harris, a Botanist & Biologist and Larry, a Philosopher and Literature guru. As this trip was one that gives college credit, we definitely gained a lot from these men. Dylan focused on the Geology, while I really took to the Botany.

On the last day, Jim paddled by us and said, "Well, if you can make it four days in a canoe together, you can make it through anything." He is right. We do have something special. We are learning and will continue to learn together.

Guest Book

As I was doing some online wedding planning, I heard the doorbell. FedEx? I saw a package on my door step. I couldn't remember ordering anything, but it had my name on it. Hmm.. As I took it into the kitchen and started to open it, "OH YEAH!!! MY WEDDING GUEST SIGN-IN BOOK!!!!". I had made it last week and ordered it on Monday. They predicted a few weeks until shipping so I was surprised to see it done so soon. It looks great! I can't wait for everyone to sign it.

Bridal Shower

My long time friend Kooie threw me a bridal shower on Wednesday. She is so sweet. She invited all of my favorite friends from Lehi. I hadn't seen them all together in a long time. It was so great to see everyone there. This was the uh.. informative.. shower. All but one (Tade) who came have been married for a while. They were pretty nice, and didn't do or say anything TOO embarrassing. I hadn't been the main event of a party in a long time. Kooie had me dressed in a silk, light-up, sash with lettering that said, "Bride to Be", and a matching crown. I had forgotten what it feels like with everyone watching you open gifts. I guess that is how the wedding day will be for us. I don't think either of us like the spotlight, so we will have to see how that goes. Thank you all so much! It was defiantly a memorable evening.

Dylan's cousin got married this weekend in the Manti temple. We went to all of the festivities and got an awakening that we would be doing the same thing in just 27 days. In between the evening family wedding dinner and reception the next day, we went camping in Ephraim canyon with Dylan's parents. Next to a mossy lake and pine trees, we found a place to sleep. In the morning, while Allison and I performed surgery on her finger, Dylan and Erik caught a ton of fish. Dylan was on the fly rod and the rest of us were using the easy ones. For the most part it was catch and release game for the boys, but the girls had no such luck. The only thing that we caught was Allison's fly. We kept a few to eat for breakfast. Erik grilled them up on his campstove and Dylan fished out some tortillas and Cholula from the cooler. We pulled the meat from the bone and wrapped it up. It doesn't get more fresh than that. It was really awesome to get some family mountain time.

Back Yard Sundays

Since Dylan and I have gotten home from Moab, we haven't had all of the family together at once yet. So, today was Dylan's first sunday dinner as the "Fiance", with everyone! He has been apart of the family for a while now, but it was fun to see the full family together. He is going to fit in just great. Actually, while trying to come up with baby names for Laurel and Billy's little boy, Dylan kept giving ideas that Billy loved and Laurel didn't. So they decided that they were going to adopt and name babies together. I guess that leaves you and me Laurel.. What do you think of the name, Gilbert? We can call him Gil. Don't worry, you will think of something. Probably during the baby blessing like you did last time.

Iron and Wine

Hermana Dastrup, Dylan's sister, came home from her mission this week! As an old friend of mine since Jr. High School, it was great to see her again! Same old Whitney. Tuesday, Dylan took us both out to get sushi. Over lunch, we remembered that there was a free concert at the Gallivan Center. Iron and Wine, one of my favorites, got to be her first concert since her return. Welcome home sis.

Our New Place

This morning, Dylan and I went to our new apartment. In preparation for moving in, we cleaned for about four hours. He cleaned the carpet and the baseboards and I scrubbed everything down with a little bleach. It was a huge process. We were sure glad to get it clean. This place has mice so we wanted to reallllly make sure that it was suuuuper clean before we started putting stuff over there. Afterwards, I went to the dentist and ran errands while Dylan went to Cabela's to get an elk tag. My step dad let us use his trailer to get take all the big furniture over. Our new neighbors and long time friends, Jeff and Lindsay Christofferson helped us unload. Just as we were finishing up, Doug, Alyssa and Brenna came to see the new place before we went to NickiShmidt's birthday party. We stayed for a short but sweet visit then returned to our place and completely unpacked everything. It is going to be so awesome when we move in! Despite its imperfections, we love the place! Our plan is to stay in Lehi a bit longer. When school starts, Dylan will move into our place, while I get some last chance girl time with my river friends, Kpax, Brenna, Stuki and Jess. Through the day, Dylan and I kept realizing, WE ARE GETTING MARRIED!!!

Home at last to plan the wedding!??

Sunday night, I left Moab to go home to plan the wedding. It was more sad driving out of town than I thought it would be. It has been such an amazing adventure this summer. I will really miss this place. Especially because Dylan is still there until Tuesday! We have been so spoiled here. We not had to leave eachothers side very much at all this summer. When we are apart, we miss eachother like crazy. We have gotten so used to always having eachother there.

Allison will be making my dress so we went shopping for inspiration. I tried on a few dresses with my mom and mom-to-be watching. Once I had a good idea of what I wanted, we went to YellowBird Fabrics to get the lace. That evening, I went over for a fitting. She made a muslin prototype of the dress and it looked great! I am really excited to see it all done. I am actually having fun with all this sissy wedding stuff. It's been a blast.

Don't worry Dylan, or any of you readers that like surprises, this is not my dress! In fact, nor will it look like this one. Its just one of the many that I tried on..

While we were fitting the muslin dress, Dylan called me. This is how the conversation went..
Dylan: I have some good news and some bad news, what do you want first?
me: Uh.. Bad.
Dylan: I lost the key to the safety deposit box. (Where our wedding rings are)
me: Oh no.
Dylan: But the good news is, we get to come back to Moab this weekend! (Because I have the other key one on my keyring)

Well, this good news wasn't really good news for me. The bank isn't even open on weekends. Allison and I talked and we decided that I should just drive down that night and get it taken care of while he is running his last Westwater trip. That way, I can caravan with him to make sure that his pick-up, Raylene, will make it home in time for him to start bus driving Wednesday morning.

So my good news was, I got to drive down to see Dylan! (I suprised him just as he was heading to bed) and... I have my ring now!

The Date Has Officially Changed!

September 25!!!
Dylan's little sister Whitney is coming home from her mission in two weeks! She was awarded the Huntsman Scholarship for Utah State's business program. This scholarship requires her to be in Switzerland over October 10th. We really want her to be there so we called the wedding venue and found one of their last open nights which happens to be two weeks earlier. It is now officially planning crunch-time! Fortunately I have a lot of help.

Engaged!

Our Story
After 4 months of dating, Dylan proposed. I said, "Yes!".

He and I have been crossing paths for the last ten years. We went to the same high school. I was friends with his sister Whitney in Jr. High. At that time, all I knew about Dylan was that he was a soccer player like I was. I remember him sitting on the sidelines at some of the Lehi Girls Soccer games. With only a few vague memories, I never in a million years would have thought that I would end up with him like this.

It started last year when I saw him at a ski premier movie at UVU. Afterwards, we talked and I invited him to come to a one-year anniversary party that my work, Metropolitan Salon, was having. Turns out, the party wasn't our style. There was loud music and dancing, we preferred to just hang out and play hacky sac out front. Nothing came of this night besides my realization that Dylan was really cool.

Occasionally, I would see him at school, in and out of the Adventure Center that I work at. We were in to the same things. Soccer, outdoors, and thrift store fashion. At the beginning of the semester, he walked into my Geology class. I noticed his worn jeans and peruvian hat with beautiful long hair under it. "What a hippie.." I thought, "Wait, that's Dylan Dastrup!" I didn't talk to him that day, he left just as class ended. I wanted to let him know that I was in his class so I wrote him online to make sure that he save me a seat for the next time we met. He did as I asked and we sat together for each class. It only took two weeks to start studying together in our spare time. It was convenient that we had an excuse to hang out. On a limb, I invited him to my Super Bowl Extravaganza.

The next time in class, I invited him to come to Moab with my friends and me. Being spontaneous, he said OK. It was on this trip that I got sick. He gave me a preisthood blessing and then it was all history. We haven't spent a day apart that we could control. He talked to my boss' while we were in Moab and got the job with ease. I was so excited, so was he. Sometimes in class we would catch each others eye and smile really big because we both knew we were daydreaming of Moab. We would just say one word, "MOAB!" Then shudder and giggle for a while.

Early on, I had plans of leaving Moab to go on a humanitarian trip. After being with Dylan non-stop, I told him that I would be willing to change my plans to be with him. He told me that he already had. This marked a turning point for us in our dating life. We realized that we would sacrifice a lot to be with eachother. He had all intentions of working at the Grand Canyon this summer until the Moab opportunity opened up. We just couldn't leave each other again. Ten days apart while I vacationed in Ireland was long enough. No way could we do six more weeks!

I went to Arizona with his family for his cousins wedding. Perhaps it was just the atmosphere, but as we sat on the golf course, we talked openly about working towards marriage. It was strange to talk about so soon, but we both felt it to be a good thing. A good thing that felt so right.

As finals commenced, we made it to Moab. Surprisingly, we even passed our classes after staying up until two am every night together.

In Moab, we have learned so much about each other. Everyday we see each other in a new situation and a new light. He has become my constant.

July 3rd, at the same place that we first camped, he asked my hand in marriage. We are so lucky. The big day will be October 10th in the Salt Lake Temple. Though we loved every minute of courtship, are loving every minute of our engagement, October can't come soon enough. We are so excited to start this new life together.
